Résumé

L’étude porte sur les formes bâties sur le relatif-interrogatif ὅστις qui se comportent comme des indéfinis de choix libre quand elles sont associées aux particules οὖν, δή et ποτέ, et particulièrement sur la perte de leur fonction subordonnante. L’état de la question est confronté à un corpus de plus de 700 occurrences d’époque classique ; celui-ci permet d’établir que les emplois indéfinis se développent à partir du relatif, particulièrement autour de la forme ὅστισοῦν. Une description et une explication du fonctionnement synchronique vient corroborer la traditionnelle explication diachronique.

Abstract

The present paper investigates the forms built on the relative-interrogative pronoun ὅστις when used as free choice indefinites in combination with the particles οὖν, δή and ποτέ; more precisely the paper analyses how these forms lose their subordinative function. It puts the state of the art in relation to a corpus made of more than 700 utterances from the Classical period. The corpus shows that the indefinite use arises from the relative pronoun, especially from the combination ὁστισοῦν. The description and explanation of how the indefinite functions from a synchronic point of view supports the traditional diachronic explanation.
